Over 150 community citizens attended the United Way of the Ozarks FLIP Symposium "Danger in Our Backyard – Meth in the Ozarks

"It is our hope that this symposium has created awareness of this problem as well as identified action steps on how to stop this "Danger in our Backyard." said Woman's Initiative Chair, Mary Kay Meek

Proclamations declaring November 24, 2005 as Meth Awareness Day were presented to Mary Kay Meek by Greene County Commissioner, David Coonrod and Springfield Mayor, Tom Carlson.


"Meth is a huge problem here in the Ozarks; it is cheap and easy to make and highly addictive. We hope the Meth Symposium will increase awareness of the devastating effects of this drug and mobilize the participants to take action to eradicate its use" said Women's Initiative chair, Mary Kay Meeks.

United Way of the Ozarks -Female Leaders in Philanthropy (FLIP) presents their Fall Symposium "Danger in Our Backyard – Meth in the Ozarks" on Monday October 24, 2005. The symposium will be from 8:30 am –1:30 pm and will be held at the University Plaza Convention Center.

There will be a proclamation from Mayor Tom Carlson declaring October 24,2005 as "Meth Awareness Day" and will be breakout sessions with Community Partnership of the Ozarks and the Drug Endangered Child Team (DECT). There will also be an update on Meth Legislation from the office of Senator Talent. The luncheon keynote speaker will be Michael McManus. Mr. McManus is a Retired Special Agent, as Drug Enforcement Administration supervisor, he served as Chief of Operations for Mexico and Central America at DEA headquarters in Washington, D.C. You won't want to miss his unique perspective on the war against drugs and how it relates to the Meth problem that we are experiencing in our own backyard

"On October 24, 2005 the United Way of the Ozarks Women's Initiative and Females Leaders in Philanthropy(FLIP) are holding a symposium from 8:30 am – 1:30pm "Danger in Our Back Yard – Meth in the Ozarks" at the University Plaza Convention Center. Cost is $25.00 and tickets can be purchased by contacting United Way of the Ozarks at 863-7700.

We are planning on over 500 attendees and have asked Springfield's mayor, Tom Carlson to announce a proclamation as " October 24, 2005 Meth Awareness Day in the Ozarks". Key note speaker will be Michael P. McManus, a retired Special Agent from the Drug Enforcement Administration. Senator Jim Talent Office will address Legislation regarding Methamphetamine and we are also having a panel of the members of The Drug Endangered Childrens Team (DECT) to address community concerns and steps toward community solutions.
